grain or silage when more than 75 pounds per acre of potash was applied. The most economical rate qf nitrogen depended on the past cropping history of the soil. When corn followed a grasslegume sod, 75 pounds of nitrogen per acre appeared optimum. When corn did not follow a sod crop, rates of nitrogen well in excess oi 100 pounds per acre were required for best yields. Investigations were also con ducted with Congaree soils. These are well-drained, first bottom soils. Irrigation was used in these experiments, says Lutz. Irrigation increased yields, but was not economical on this first bottom soil. Corn grain and silage yields were obtained slightly over 200 bushels and 31 tons per acre, respectively. The most economic rates of nitrogen was about 175 pounds per acre, and of potash about 75 pounds per acre.
