'In the entertainment world it's called giving an encore: It means going through the whole thing again. In another world-health and medicine--it*s called having a relapse, and there's nothing entertaining about It. Certainly not when the thing being gone through again is tuberculosis.
Yet that's what happens to 'ten thousand Americans every year, in addition to about 50,000 who cotne down with active TB for the first time. Why do so many people recovering or recovered from this serious disease find them selves trapped in a return bout? Nobody knows the whole answer, but many investigators—doctors, nurses, public health workers, research scientists—are trying hard to find out. One reason on which everybody seems to agree is failure of the discharged patient or convalescent outpatient to do his homework. This means primarily taking his prescribed medicine; it also is very apt to Include such things as periodic chest x-rays, proper nutrition, adequate rest, and reporting back to the j clinic at stated intervals.
