The season of brides, parties, showers and graduation gifts is here again. And as usual, the mails are full df small envelopes, unsealed, bearing invitations to gala events and red notations, •postage due 1£*. Recipients are puzzled, angered, irritated or amused, as they pay their copper for an invitation. If the enclosed card bears a ,date of an event to occur in the future, as date of a shower or birthday party, it is first class mail, according to the Postal Manual, guidebook for postal personnel. Other descriptions of first class mail include letters, postal cards, post cards, airmail weighing not more than 8 ounces whether sealed or unsealed, and all matter wholly or partly in writing. Written matter is explained as “handwritten or typewritten matter, including identical copies prepared by automatic typewriter and carbon copies, printed cards or letters bearing a written date, where date is not date of card but gives information as to when something will occur or has occurred, (as a birth announcement).
Post office employees are obligated to make the notation “Postage Due* if “short paid” mail is found, sealed or unsealed. They will be glad to answer questions about these items, too. The showers for brides, those having birthdays and new babies are planned because of love and happiness, so in the same spirit all are reminded that these events are FIRST Class and postage rates for them are 5(1 per ounce or fraction thereof, sealed or unsealed, and thank you notes are also first class and also cost 5(1 each. ;
