Soc. Security Notes

Springtime and weddings go together. According to Mrs. Hazel F. Daly, Social Security District Manager in Winchester, Va. all brides should have their new names entered on such important documents as insurance policies, savings accounts, social security records, etc. Many brides, caught up in the first happy flush of marriage, forget to notify the people who must know their correct names. If a girl gets married, it does not mean her social security account is closed. Almost all wives will have some additional earnings on which they will pay social security tax during their lifetimes. More and more women are working regularly outside the home — some to supplement their husbands' incomes, others to escape from the routine of housework, and still others to lend their skills to an essential activity. Almost every woman will file at least one claim for social security benefits in her lifetime. All too often, the social security administration only learns a woman has changed her name when a report of her earnings cannot be entered on her record. To ensure the accuracy of earnings records, all reports are checked to make sure the name and social security number match. Where they do not match the administration must write to the employer to ask why. Often a man must be sent out to see the employer and sometimes to see the worker. While thjs is not too difficult, it does cost money. Over the entire country it costs & lot of money. Since it is so easy to change a name on social security records this needless cost could easily be eliminated.
