Richmond, Va.“It can be done," said Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, referring to the low total of eight deaths during the three-day Memorial Day weekend this yean “Eight deaths are eight unnecessary tragedies," he said, “but it is not unusual for them to pass 20 on a long holiday weekend. There were 15 during the three-day Fourth of July weekend last year and the coming holiday this year will also run three days." Colonel Woodson said that he felt motorists were reacting to the Increased number of warnings before and during a holiday and that they were aware of increased dangers, since of late deaths on holiday weekends have been running lower than the average for two-day, non-holiday summer ones. He urged that drivers start both legs of their trips early so that there will be less temptation to hurry and take chances, to try to avoid night driving, to drive only when in good physical condition and to wear seatbelts at all times. "Past experience shows speed to be a big factor. Remember, each added mils per hour means a crash is more likely, in that control over the car is lessened, and that if one happens it will be more severe," he concluded.
