Park Completed
Completion of a new entrance station into Shenandoah National Park near Front Royal is eliminating traffic congestion in that area, Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins stated today. Hoskins said the station got its first test during the recent Fourth of July three-day week end when 4,232 vehicles carry ing 14,809 visitors were checked through the three lanes without waiting in line unnecessarily. Largest day was Sunday, July 3, with6,573 visitors in 1,879 vehicles. Traffic is expected to flow freely through the station during the heavy October weekends when thousands travel to Shenandoah during the fall color season, Hoskins predicted.
Members of the Albert O'Mealy family of Alliance, Ohio, were the first official visitors through the new station after its acceptance by the Government. The O’Mealy family was en route to Nags Head, North Carolina, on a camping vacation. Hoskins said the ticket booths in the new station are designed so that they are on the same level with the pavement, thus providing the ran*gers on duty with better control of traffic and makes fora speed-up in ticket sales. If necessary, more than 125 cars could be in line without tying up traffic on U. S.340as compared to a back-up potential of 85 cars at the old station, according to Hoskins.
