Anniversary Meeting
On December 14th, the Rap pahannock Historical Society will hold its second anniversary meeting at the Court House in Washington. A program of considerable worth and interest is planned for the evening. The Historical Society was established two years ago to capture some of the fleeting history of this area, and to encourage the preservation of its antiquities. Among the many programs developed for the Society is one which should be of special interest to every one living in Rappahannock. It is the establishment of a County museum for area artifacts. The old telephone exchange perhaps the oldest standing brick building in Washington - has been donated to the Historical Society by the Telephone Company with a small plot of ground on Gay Street. Work of restoration has been under way for some time. The building has been moved to a better location on the lot and raised to street level. A full basement was built under it, ] and interior repairs have been started. Landscaping will began soon.
Several items have already been donated for exhibition. The Society hopes to establish a permanent exhibition of early area furnishings. Because of the expense of moving and restoring the building the Society is starting a drive to raise $5,000.00 to complete the work by early summer, with opening date in time to attract summer visitors.
