Prepares To Open
Having endured the last two unusually poor winters for ski ing and snowmaking, the Skyline Ski Area is looking forward to a new season beginning December 15th, or sooner 5 there is a surprise snow fall or unusually cold weather in early December. Dr. Roswell S. Bower sett. President of Skyline, has engaged Mr. Ralph Sparling of Bethesda, Maryland to be Geiv eral Manager. Mr. Sparling has had extensive business and restaurant experience, including fourteen years as general manager of the very popular restaurant, "Duke Ziefrtfr-qwtr
Com, Sparling will work closely with Mr. Jewell Blankenship, who has been ski operations mana ger during the five years the ski area has been open. Mr. Herbert (Humpy) Smoot has become expert in the tricky art of making'snow, and will continue to insure that snow is produced any night the thermometer drops sufficient ly low. Dr. Bowersett expressed his pleasure in the growing number of enthusiastic local skiers, and his appreciation of the steadily increasing sup port Rappahannock citizens are offering to the Skyline Ski Area. “More people seem to understand what the ski area will ultimately contribute to the economy of the county. Their interest and good will are very gratifying."
Skyline will again lease the Rush River Lodge in Harris Hollow for ski groups, but will need to call on local people to help house skiers over night during the Christmas holidays, and on the weekends following. Anyone who wishes to offer lodging to skiers should contact Mr. Sparling at ”*675-3719 to indicate the type of accommodation and the price.
