•will be beneficial to both the trucking industry and the motoring public.* He said the cooperation of the trucking Industry would •alleviate long delays at critl cal points on Virginia highways during the winter months.* For years, both the Highway Department and the state police have provided frequent road condition reports for the general public during and immediately after snow storms. These, of course, will be continued. . ' The new procedure represents the first attempt on a State-wide basis to provide information about specific trouble spots to the trucking firms and their drivers. The information relayed under this program will only Involve critical points, such as hills or temporarily blocked sections of road. Here's how it will work: Each of the Highway Department's eight district engineers. located in different geographic regions of the State will relay information about road conditions to one trucking company in their area during heavy snows. This information will Include estimated delay times, if any. This one company in each area, in turn, will be on a stand-by basis to pass the information on to other truck ing firms or to individual truck drivers who may request it. The plan also provides for the eight companies in each district to report to a Richmond based-trucking firm* which will serve as a central control point and make reports on trouble spots all across the State available for truckers. Under the cooperative arrangement, dispatchers for the companies would not send trucks into areas where these spots exist, and will advise if chains are needed at any point, based on reports from the highway offices. Drivers will be instructed by their employers to follow such advice.
