The disease, which accounts for more than half of all! deaths in the United States, j has been brought into sharp focus at this particular timej by President Johnson’s desig- : i nation of February 26th as jHeart Sunday. ! A major research effort has [been brought to bear on the 1 problem, supported by public as well as private funds, to cut down the huge toll.
Progress is being reported, through heart and blood vessel surgery, electronic technology, the cardiac catheter and new chemical tests, among others, tcf add years of life to people who now have heart trouble as well as toward preventing its development in' people who are prone to it but not yet afflicted. Among residents of Rap-; pahannock Qounty, according to the latest iigures from the U. S. Public Health Service, 53.4 percent of all deaths are due to heart disease, strokes and other ills of the cardi-! ovascular system. This compares with 54.2 per cent in the United States as a iwhole and 53.7 percent in the; i State of Virginia. The ratio varies from one! part of the country to another.; All of the low-ranking states ! lie west of the Mississippi River and all but one of them lie west of the Missouri River as well. Suggested as reasons for this geographical difference are air pollution, hereditary back ground, amount of physical activity and degree of emotional tension.
