Hog Producers Must

' Ralph Yarborough, products promotion and agreements coi ordinator of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and ! Commerce, announced today i that forms are now available to certify voting eligibility of j Virginia hog growers for the pork referendum to be held April 1, 1967.
To be eligible to vote, hog producers must complete the certification form and return it to VDA on or before March 1, 1967. Each producer who sold 25 pigs/or hogs during 1966 will qualify. Ballots will then be mailed to these certified swine producers. Certification forms are available at county extension offices, livestock markets, packer buying stations, feed stores and from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and! Commerce, or you may clip and use the one below. Yarborough pointed out that; the self help plan was approved! by the 1966 General Assembly j and the date for the referen! dum was set by the Board of' Agriculture and Commerce. ! “A simple majority," said Yasi borough, “is all that is required to pass the referendum.*
If the proposed assessment! is approved by the majority! of those voting in the referendum, a Virginia Pork Industry Commission will be established.
It is anticipated that $34,000 will be raised yearly on an assessment of five cents per head on all slaughter hogs sold in Virginia, and two cents per head on'all feeder pigs soldi in Virginia. These funds will 1 be used for education and re- ; [search and will be under the I management of the Pork In- 1 dustry Commission. Groups similar to the Virginia Pork Industry Commission have already been : established in the state for other farm commodities.
