Trout Better Bargain
To Fishermen Today
"Trout are a much better bargain to the fishermen of Virginia now than they were 10 years ago," says Game Commission Fish Division Chief Jack Hoff man. "Improved feeding and rearing techniques have Cut the cost per pound of trout about in half during that period," he said. From the beginning of the state’s trout rearing efforts up into the late 1950’s the growing fish were fed a mix ture of ground fish supplement ed by meat products such as beef, horse and sheep livers, hearts and melts. This ration was expensive and time consuming to prepare and feed. Food costs during this period were about 33 cents per pound of trout produced. Beginning in 1959 the Commission began experimentally substituting pelleted food for the ground fish in the ration. By 1962 the trout were on a pelleted dry feed that contained all essential nutrients and ground meatpra duct supplements were elimi nated entirely. Food costs per pound of trout range between 16 and 18 cents with these modern feeding techniques, or about half the cost incurred 10 years ago. * Not only have costs been reduced, the flesh of the growing trout is much more palatable and disease problems have been reduced.
