Hold First Conclave

Last Saturday thirty of the forty Historical Societies of Virginia, along with a number of other Societies interested in Virginia hisotry held an all day conference at Haley Hall, Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. Over a hundred people who are vitally interested or associated with the preservation and promulgation of Virginia historical materials attended. Col. Howard A. MacCord, Sr. chaired the program which was exceptionally well planned and beautifully timed. His program was replete with noted speakers from all areas of Virginia antiquities. Dr. Wilcomb E. Washburn, Curator of Political History, Smithsonian Institute, started the program of lectures by saying that it is impossible to understand Virginia history without a good knowledge of 17th century Virginia, and that the Piedmont is least known and many mysteries surround the Indian life of the Piedmont. Ben H. Bolen, Commissioner of Parks, spoke on the necessity of preserving historic sites, protecting wild life, and providing vast park areas for recreation. Mr. John M. Jennings, Director of the Virginia Historical Society gave a stirring report on the vast resources of the Society and the tremendous work it has already done and is doing. He offered much help to the County and City Societies through its library of over two million publications, its research facilities may be used and he pointed out that serious students
