By W. H. Lyne Research results on corn row spacing in Virginia does not show any significant advantage in reducing row spaces below 36" - 40". While narrower rows have proven worthwhile in the mid west ‘we just aint out there*. Further study is needed so don’t jump off the deep end. More significant in so far as the economics of corn pro duction here in Rappahannock is concern is the importance of plant population according to soil type, fertilization based on soil types, soil test and use to be made of the corn. If you are shooting for a plant population of 20,000 per acre also be sure the hybrid is bred to produce well at this stand level. Your seed dealer should supply you with this information. Also, remember if 20,000 plants per acre is your goal plant 20% more seed per acre or 24,000. Most corn tests around 90% germination and some goes for crow feed. Also, some plants are broken and destroyed by man, machine, and insects before reaching maturity. NOW is the time to calibrate that corn planter. Make sure it is ship shape and don’t hesitate to study the operators manual for your planter. If you’re after a 20,000 plant population, each planter should be dropping a grain every 7" @ 36* row width, every 6 1/2" @ 38* row width or every 6 1/3* (© 40". row width.
