Accidental Poisoning
Kills 80 Virginians
Accidental poisoning claimed the lives of approximately 80 Virginians in 1966, the State Department of Health reported this week. In disclosing the figure in connection with the current National Poison Prevention Week the department pointed out an apparent decline in such deaths from 1965, when the total was 86. The new total is a preliminary figure for 1966. It could be changed slightly by amended medical examiners' reports, or by reports from neighboring states of Virginians treated there before succumbing to accidental poi soning. Death certificates received by the department's Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics indicated that alcohol continued to be the chief cause of fatal poisoning, with 37 deaths attributed to it in 1966, up one from the previous year.
