Other leading causes of death by accidental poisoning last year were (with the 1965 figure in parentheses) other and unspecified solid and liquid substances with 9 (6); motor vehicle exhaust gas with 8 (8); and barbituric acid and derivatives with 4 (9). Tied for fifth place with three each in 1966 were other carbon monoxide gas; petroleum products; industrial solvents; other analgesic and soporific drugs; and other and unspecified drugs. In 1965, their frequencies as death causes ranged from one for petroleum products to seven for other carbon monoxide gas While these were the fatal cases, aspirin continued to be a leading cause of accidental poisoning, although there were only two fatalities reported. The Medical College of Virginia, one of the state's 19 poison control centers, reported that aspirin was involved in 28 per cent of all cases reported there for 1966, a drop from slightly more than 34 per cent in 1965.
The leading causes of accidental poisonings continued to be medications — infernal and external -- with 65 per cent of cases reported. Of the remainder, household materials were major causes — especial ly petroleum distillates such as kerosene, gasoline and fuel oil. Others were cleaners, bleach and furniture polish. Of the aspirin poisonings, the center at MCV reported 116 cases involving baby forms of the product, and 91 involving adult forms. Its ready availability and common use appear to make it more likely to be ingested. To reduce accidental poisonings, the department's Bureau of Health Education offered these suggestions; 1. Don’t keep or leave potential poisons — medicines, furniture polishes, and sprays of various kinds -- where small children can reach them 2. Don't U6e cups or glasses to keep non-edible items like kerosene. Such containers are associated with food and drink by children.
3. Always read the label and follow the directions, no matter how frequently the product has been used. If the label is missir.^. replace it by using adhesive tape and a ballpoint pen. If you’re unsure of the substance, discard it.
