Week Noted Mar. 1-8

Weights and Measures Week is celebrated across the nation from March 1 - 8. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce serves the consumer and retailer in many ways under the state’s weights and measures law. All items that are prepackaged are subject to check under the law. This includes not only the weight of the package and the proper label to identify its contents, but to see that the size of the container does not mislead the customer.

Small capacity scales are checked under the Virginia law. These scales are normally of less than 400 pound and are used in grocery and hardware stores and in confectioneries. Scales in tobacco warehouses where baskets of tobacco are weighed for sale are also checked.

All gasoline pumps are subject to inspection to assure the proper delivery and charge and gasoline signs must meet certain specifications.
