Hunting and Fishing licenses are now due. Get them now before “Ole” Joe comes along some week-end and says “Let’s go fishing”. If you hunt or fish be ready. Have your license.
Dove season comes in at noon, September 7- this year. That’s a Saturday and the season will run through Saturday, November 2. Dove hunters will also have 2 more weeks in December. A call r | county survey shows that nesting doves this Spring were down 3% from a year ago in the overall Eastern part of the U. S. In spite of the general decline, Virginia’s dove count revealed 38% more nesting birds than last year. Although this is a good sign a number of factors will enter the picture before hunters get a chance to start shooting. The success of this increased nesting, migration patterns, crop harvest patterns and prevailing weather are among those things which will determine what kind of shooting we’ll have.
Which brings to mind another factor in all hunting. Will we have guns and ammo to hunt with? Restrictive gun legislation? Let’s hope not. Not only will it cause a hardship on hunters and disarm law abiding people, while having little effect on the criminal element, it will cripple wildlife conservation efforts as we now know them.
