Bennett of Charlottesville was killed when the vehicle driven by her husband, Benjamin K. Bennett, left Skyline Drive and overturned near Mile 98.9. Hoskins said the rangei investigating the accident reported he was told by Bennett that as he rounded a sharp curve he came into a patch of dense fog and was unable to keep the vehicle from going over the bank.
Campground use has reflected the travel increase, according to Hoskins, who said the ne« Matthews Arm Campground at Mile 22.2, which opened to the public on June 14, already has proven popular and ail modem campgrounds in the Park have been taxed to capacity on most weekends since the summer travel season began with the closing of schools.
As a sidelight to the Matthews Arm Campground opening Hoskins said the first campers to use the new facility were Mr. and Mrs. Floyd C. Bueter of Salt Lake City, Utah. The Bueters registered at 10:30 a.m. on the opening day.
As evidence of travel generating from throughout the country, Hoskins reported that on Thursday, June 20, visitors from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Canada, and Mexico were recorded. A sampling for the week of June 16, excluding Virginia, showed the largest number of visitors originated from Maryland, followed by Pennsylvania, Ohio, the District of Columbia, New Jersey, Michigan, and New York.
