Residents of Rappahannock County entered the yekr 1968 with more protection in the form of life insurance than they ever had. The amount of coverage, pei family, was at a record high.
For the local community as a whole, life insurance holdings are now placed at more than $14,747,000.
Data on the number of policy holders and the extent ol coverage in force throughout the United States as a whole and in each of the states are contained in the current Life Insurance Facl Book and in other reports.
They show that the amount ol life insurance of all kinds in force in the country is now well over a trillion dollars, which is twice a£ much as there was ten years ago
Not included in these figures are the insurance coverage provided by the Federal government for veterans and others and the insurance issued by fraternal organizations.
In the State of Virginia alone the reports indicate, the amounl in force comes tc $21,208,000,000, as compared with $10,179,000,000 in 1960.
For a majority of families, it is found that there is a direcl relationship between their income and the amount of insurance they carry. The amount held by the average family in the state is equivalent to 25 months income after taxes.
Applying this yardstick tc Rappahannock County and to the average income reported for the area, the estimated life insurance locally is $10,400 per family.
This is much more than the average holdings throughout the local area in 1960, $6,000.
It adds up to a grand total ol $14,747,000 for the local population. The bulk of it is ir ordinary life insurance. Group insurance is next in point ol volume.
