Historic Hot Line

To Be Installed

An historic hot line telephone, connecting Luray Caverns with the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace in Staunton, will be installed at Luray on July 22 at 11 a.m. The telephone, originally used In the White House by Woodrow Wilson, will be installed in the main visitor’s lobby at Luray Caverns, and will be available for limited use by tourists. The “candle” style telephone, having no dial system, was added to the Wilson collection at his birthplace several years ago by the late Mrs. Woodrow Wilson.

H.T.N. Graves, president of Luray Caverns Corporation and a trustee of the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace Foundation, said “We feel that all travelers to Luray Caverns should be aware of the great president who was bom in the Shenandoah Valley. Luray Caverns is proud to have a part in telling the story of Woodrow Wilson.”

The telephone has been displayed for a number of years in a traveling exhibit sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace. The installation on July 22 will mark the first time it has ever been connected into the phone system since it was in the White House.
