Held Last Week
Jack Godwin Whitfield of Warrenton was found guilty on two counts of manslaughter in Rappahannock County Circuit Court Thursday. Whitfield was the operator of a vehicle which crashed into a tree east of Amissville on November 27 and resulted in the death of two passengers in the car.
A jury of twelve found Whitfield guilty and recommended $500 fine on each count and a jail sentence of 9 months on each count. Sentence will be imposed at the May term of circuit court.
The jury was composed of Russell Lee Payne, foreman; Lewis Butler, L. W. Buckley, Magdalene Dearing, Clifford Dennis, Hubert Gilkey, Ruth Grimsley, Albert C. Hensley, James Leake, James McDonald, Russell O. Smith, and May L. Payne.
Whitfield was represented by Henry Whiting of Winchester.
Judge R. V. Snead was on the bench.
Danny Ray Baldwin of Sperryville was acquitted on a charge of reckless driving in Rappahannock Circuit Court on Wednesday. Baldwin had been charged with reckless driving following a traffic crash in Sperryville on the night of January 13.
On the jury were L. W. Buckley, foreman; Lewis Butler, Magdalene Dearing, Albert C. Hensley and Otis Jordan.
Baldwin was represented by J W. Fletcher and Judge Snead presided.
