The Rappahannock County Board of Su >ervisors has been and continues to work doggedly to solve two major problems facing the county, the pollution of the Thornton River, Re: a sewerage system for Sperryville and dumping facilities for the entire county. The special meeting of the group held Friday however, proved fruitless as far as real solutions go.
The legislative body, being pushed^ by the local Water and Sewer Authority which in turn being hustled by the State affiliation, finds itself in an uncomfortable squeeze as it meets the negative pressure from the citizens of Sperryville on the other side. The State Authority, concerned with the pollution of the Thornton River in Sperryville resulting from some homes piping raw sewerage directly into the river, is demanding action to remedy the situation. A public sewerage system has been proposed and a grant is available to aid with financing.
To get the ball rolling, the Rappahannock Water and Sewer Authority had unanimously requested the Board of v Supervisors to act on the following resolution calling for an ordinance. It read: “We, the members of the Rappahannock County Water and <■ Sewer Authority, request the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors to pass an appropriate ordinance to require the owners of every dwelling, business establishment, manufacturing establishment, and all other establishment in Rappahannock County to have acceptable sewer systems in accordance with existing state laws, rules and regulations and that everyone located within 200 feet of a central sewerage system be requested to connect to the system.” After discussion indicated that the Sperryville residents felt there was discrimination in the act and that costs for a system were exhorbitant, and the Commonwealth’s Attorney felt that a blanket ordinance was not proper the action ended. It seemed to be a situation of which came first the chicken or the egg.
