Spong Named to Subcommittee
U. S. Senator William B. Spong, Jr., has been appointed a member of a Special Subcommittee on Oceanography which will help determine the future course of United States oceanographic programs.
Eleven other members of the Senate Commerce Committee were named to the unit by Chairman Warren G. Magnuson (D-Wash). In addition, Senator Magnuson will serve as an ex officio member of the Subcommittee.
The Subcommittee will help determine U. S. Policy in the United Nations when the UN discusses the extent to which a coastal state will have jurisdiction over mineral resources located in adjacent suboceanic lands.
The Subcommittee will participate in the establishment of a national program for the orderly development of the United States coastal zone.
Senator Ernest F. Hollings (D-S. C.) has been appointed chairman of the Subcommittee. Other members are Senators John 0. Pastore (D-R.I.), Philip A. Hart (D-Mich.), Russell B. Long (D-La.), Daniel K.
