The cornea is the lens-like covering over the pupil of the eye. Medical science has not been able to create a synthetic cornea. Only human tissue will do.
The Old Dominion Eye Bank receives its basic financial and moral support from some 175 Lions Clubs in eastern Virginia. Through the efforts of the Lions and a number of dedicated eye surgeons, no blind individual who can be helped by a corneal transplant will be turned away for lack of funds. But - they may be doomed to delay or dissapointment unless many more Virginians agree to pledge their eyes on death to this humanitarian cause.
