Campaign Mapped

!

The State Department of j Health announced today that it , will conduct a campaign in { cooperation with the Medical , Society of Virginia and local . chapers of the National Foundation - March of Dimes to 1 urge parents to have their | children immunized against | “German” measles (rubella). I

It was stated that a major , public education campaign would be conducted to clear up the public’s general confusion over j the difference between “German” measles and “old-fashioned” I measles - to differentiate between ! the rubella virus and rubeola virus, and the two separate ; vaccines that have been developed to combat them.

The measles vaccine that was ; licensed in 1963 protects children only from rubeola, variously known as the “old-fashioned 7 to 10-day,” “big,” “red” or “hard” , measles. Vaccine for rubella, ( which is commonly called, “German” or “3-day” measles, was licensed just last June. Prior, to that time there was no, protection from this disease.

Parents will be urged to take their children to their private doctors for rubella immunization. The State Health Department does not have sufficient funds to furnish the vaccine for all the children in Virginia.

The campaign will be conducted through billboards, posters and the communications media.
