Though he goes underground in search of rare blindfish and similar specimens, Mohr insists: “I do not endure the cramped miseries of playing mouse in a blacked-out Swiss cheese merely for the sake of science. I enjoy caving, along with thousands of others--teen-agers, housewives, businessmen.”
All that’s necessary to become a spelunker, Mohr writes, is “a hard hat, dependable light, and good company.” Spelunkers-the word is derived from the Latin, spelunca, meaning cave-follow a cardinal rule: Never go underground alone.
“They do not fear the collapse of a cave; the formations are remarkably stable,” Mohr says. “Dangers lie in human negligence and faulty equipment.”
