Food advertising has become a part of our lives through newspapers, magazines, radio, televison, and others. You are attracted to it by taste-tempting pictures, by the “promise” of the headline or by an interesting start to a commercial.
There are at least seven ways that food advertising serves you. One is new product news. Food advertising brings you news of good things that you might not hear about otherwise. Perhaps an unusual vegetable you’ve seldom eaten or a coffee processed in a new way to keep more of the flavor. A television commercial may show a frozen dessert you’ve never tried.
Food advertising brings you announcements of variations and improvements. Sometimes shoppers wonder why a favorite1 product is changed especially when they liked it just the way it was. In most cases, foods are changed to make them better, tastier or easier to use. Or perhaps to add texture, color or food value. Advertisements may tell you, for example, that a packaged instant pudding now comes in a larger or more convenient size or that a cracker is made from enriched flour. These could be facts that you will be glad to know about.
Food advertising can help you serve your family meals that are not only delicious but which are also nutritious and well balanced. It does this by telling you which products have been enriched or fortified with vitamins and minerals or to which protein has been added. Advertising suggest various dishes that go together to satisfy both appetities and proper eating standards.
Food advertising helps you keep out of menu ruts. By trying this-or-that and by following suggested recipe variations, you can convince your family that there are more things they like to eat than they would admit. For your choice of a table setting, the centerpiece, the platters and bowls you can use for serving, you can draw inspiration from pictures in ads.
