more thin usual harvest losses. Com borer, stalk rot and root worms were causing some lodging and ear droppage in parts of the com belt. Generally, corn was maturing faster than usual over much of the country on September 23. Heavy blight-infested fields appear much as they ordinarily look much later in the season. Dry weather in the Western corn belt in July and August hastened maturity. The blight also caused com to mature rapidly in much of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and in most of the Southern and Southeastern States. In most states many farmers were harvesting corn early to minimize harvesting losses and damage from blight and other diseases.
