Most of the tomato plants were blackened by the freeze over the 1 weekend. And on Tuesday a 1 flight of snow birds came darting out of the mist that hung in the draws along the side of Nixon’s Arm. Like a sudden flurry of snow flakes, they swirled around and then settled in the fence row along the Fodderstack Road.
Know it hasn’t been cold enough to frost the flies off the cows’ backs yet but it’s about time to be thinking of spraying your cow herd for lice, before the cold weather settles in. If you spray by, early November an,d use, the' tight, material, yout co^ttpi have the additional luxury - of being relative free of cattle grubs for the winter. Call us for specific recommendations. Remember, DDT and some of the other pesticides are definitely out.
One of my favorite veterinarians reminded me that every horse in Rappahannock County was exposed to bot flies last summer and at this time of the year most of the larvae are attached to the lining of the stomach. The attached larvae irritate the gastric mucosa resulting in digestive upsets.
Adult flies disappear with the first killing frost. Horses should be treated for bots after the first killing frost and then again in another month. If only one treatment is used, wait a month after the first frost. This gives all the migrating larvae time to reach the stomach.
This is also the time for the fall spraying of musk and curled thistles (when temperature will reach at least 60 degrees). And while we are on unpleasant subjects we have several copies of The Tax Reform Act of 1969 - Provisions of Significance to Farmers available in the office.
