Corn Blight
Lowers Production
U.S. corn production was forecast at 4,185 million bushels u of September 23-218 million bushels (5 percent) less than' forecast on September 1, and 635 million bushels (13 percent) less than the July 1 forecast. The current forecast is 393 million bushels (9 percent) less than last year. The decline in prospects from September 1 resulted largely from increased damage from Southern Corn Leaf Blight and other diseases. The current forecast is 12 percent below the record high 1967 output and would be the smallest crop since 1966. Indicated yield per acre on September 23 was 72.2 bushels, 3.7 bushels less than the September 1 forecast. The average yield per acre a year ago was a record 83.9 bushels.
Blight was more serious in the Southern States east of the Mississippi River and in Southern portions of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
