Perhaps some of the residents of Washington, Va. wondered whether or not Rappahannock was getting a railroad when this odd rig above arrived in town Tuesday evening. An inquiry of the tractor driver resulted in the following information: This is a dredge and it was being transported from Nashville, Tenn. to Sparrows Point, Baltimore to Bethlehem Steel. In all probability it will be used to widen or deepen the boat channel for better naivgation. This is only part of the outfit which will have huge pontoons added when it is put into the water. This part of it weighs 44,500 pounds. The reason for leaving the Route 211 by-pass and coming into town was a blowout on one of the 22 tires on the lowboy. The driver said this just wasn’t his day; he had been fined $525.75 at the Roanoke scales because he did not have his SCC authority with him. The rig stayed here overnight because a permit is required for an over sized operation of this kind and it is allowed to travel only in daylight.
