5-Year Tags for
Virginia Considered
Vern L. Hill, Commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles announced that by 1972, Virginia motorists could be using five-year license plates bearing three letters and three numbers instead of the traditional six numbers if the 1971 special session of the General Assembly acts on some legislation already in the drafting stage.
The prospect is a call for some cost-saving changes.
Hill announced that before the December 2 report of the Governor’s Management Study team he already had requested the drafting of proposed legislation to stagger the annual renewal dates for motor vehicle license plates on the monthly basis.
Renewal By Sticker
“The idea of five-year license plates, with renewal annually by sticker on a staggered basis, was one of the first things I had in mind when I came here last summer,” he explained. “We’ve been doing it in Oregon for years.” Hill is a former motor vehicle commissioner in Oregon.
Hill said current plans at DMV also call for shifting to the use of three letters and three numbers, perhaps with one of the letters denoting the month in which a given set of license tags will expire.
“The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators recently made a study in which it advocated uniform licensing indentification numbers for the states,” he noted, “and at least a third of the states are now using the three-letter, three digit numbering system.” " By staggering the annual renewal dates for motor vehicle license tags on a monthly basis, rather than the present annual renewal period of March 15 to April 15, the governor’s study report says the state would realize a net annual savings of $301,700.
