But perhaps we can nave ootn if these points are considered: Sooner or later lines are going to have to go underground (picture more and more transmission lines made “necessary” by more and more power consumption), so why not now? In answer to the electric company’s argument of the increased expense of going underground, surely a way can be found to spread the expense over the years so that future generations can help pay the cost. Sooner or later new ways other than electric power and even nuclear power as now produced are going to have to be found to give us these creature comforts, since both are being found to be pollutants of our environment.
In this connection several weeks ago Rap Owens, our excellent County Agent, cautioned us in his column not to jump on the anti-pesticide bandwagon too fast, and cited statistics showing saving of lives by use of DDT on mosquitos to stop the spread of malaria, and other statistics about decreased food production that would result from the decreased use of certain pesticides. T’aint necessarily so. Already new ways are being found to produce food and control mosquitos through new methods that are not harmful to human, plant and animal life. And research in this field is just beginning. I bring this into the discussion of electric power transmission lines because to me they are all part of the same problem.
