Chestnuts roasting on an oper fire sounds like a good yuletidc activity. It could be very dangerous practice. Every yeai scores of home fires start from unscreened fireplaces from something so small as a spark popping on the carpet. So -
* Have a tight screen on the fireplace, one that completely covers the fireplace opening.
* Choose hardwoods, il possible. Soft woods like pine and spruce bum up quickly, throwing dangerous sparks and coating the chimney with tars and resins that could easily catch fire at some future time.
* Don’t burn a large amount ol trash 'or Christmas wrapping paper in the fireplace. Roaring flames can ignite soot and resin; clinging to the inside of the chimney and a serious fire car result. * Avoid strewing greens or mantels or hanging stocking! from them. This is fleeting with fire. The use of electric lights or Christmas trees, tabl< arrangements, and eutdooi decorations is approved by the National Safety Council, if propei usage is practiced and precaution: taken with the relation tc materials used in decorating and overheating of lights and wires.
