Our work in this area is still quite new but it is becoming obvious that guidance and support for emotional adjustment are necessary elements in treating the older child with birth defects.
The significance of the program is that it serves as a model for developing comprehensive care to meet the special needs of an emerging group of young adults with any type of chronic disabling condition. This is true not only of those with meningomyelocele, but of patients with other handicaps, such as cardiac, kidney, metabolic or orthopedic conditions, that require chronic, long-term eare by different specialists.
