February 26 is the annual kickoff date to apply for summertime cabins in Virginia’s state parks. The Division of Parks said it will start taking applications that day for 148 vacation cottages in eight parks. They will be rented for 19 weeks from May 17 to September 27 and can be reserved only b> using official forms provided by the agency. Because the demand for accommodations is heavy and grows every year, a schedule is set up to give everyone a fair chance, the division explained. The reservations office will not accept applications until the 26tha Friday-either by mail or delivery in person, and it will return any arriving earlier. Both that day and the following Monday, the forms will be mixed together. Then they will be drawn at random, so all have an equal chance, said the division. From March 2 through the 10th, applications will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis-but only from Virginia residents. After they’re assigned, out-of state requests will be processed beginning March 11.
Persons wanting application forms may write or call the Division of Parks any time, but no reservations can be made by phone. The division’s address is 501 Southern States Building, Richmond, Va. 23219. The phone: 770-2132.
State park superintendents also have the forms available, as well as information offices of the Virginia State Travel Service.
