Virginia counts two other unusual rabbits among its fauna, the New England cottontail and the marsh rabbit. The New England cottontail is a smaller version of our common cottontail with short ears edged in black. It is found at high altitudes in the States’ western mountains. The marsh rabbit is a dark brown, almost tailless version of the cottontail whose Virginia distribution is limited to the general area of the Dismal Swamp.
