Deloris Gibbs, champion apple baker at RCHS, captured the championship in the 15th annual baking contest held in connection with the Apple Blossom festivities last week in Winchester. She was competing with 18 students from four states and took top honors with her apple pie made according to an old family recipe. Deloris is a tenth grade student at the local high school and lives in Woodville with her guardian Miss Frankie Jackson. She received an engraved silver bowl, banner and apron, and was introduced at the Ladies luncheon and to the public prior to the pageant at Handley High School Friday. Deloris rode in the parade in Winchester Saturday where she met Phyllis George of Denton, Texas who is Miss America and other notable people including Queen Shenandoah, Miss Juliana Shepard. Among other prizes presented the “Chief Cook” are a mini-vacation in Luray where she will visit the Luray Caverns, have a tour of Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive and was given passes to Skyline Caverns.
