“They took to the hills,” said Mrs. Dale J. Metzinger excitedly as she referred to herself, her husband and their family who have recently purchased Round about Camp near Sperryville in Rappahannock County. Her enthusiasm was matched by that of Col. Metzinger and their three children, Tom and Tim, unalike twin sons thirteen years old and daughter Nina, almost 12. Adding yips and yaps of approval are two black poodles who have already become adapted to country living and made friends with the horses. Col. Metzinger is retiring from the U. S. Air Force after 29 years service and with his family will settle here to operate Roundabout. They bought the 80-acre farm and camp from Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Haggerty who established the camp in 1966. The Haggertys will leave June 1 for an extended vacation with realtives in New York, Flordia and California before settling in a new home which they are having constructed at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The Metzingers are taking to the hills in Virginia literally for much of their life has been spent in geographically flat country and they are enjoying the higher elevations with its pure air. Mrs. Metzinger says she feels somewhat like a Virginian though, for she recalls marching in the Confederate Memorial Day parade at Arlington Cemetery with her grandfather John Follin who had served with Jeb Steart’s 4th Virginia Black Horse Cavalary from Warrenton. The Metzinger family comes here from Andrews Air Force Base, Md. where Col. Metzinger has been with the Headquarters Air Force Systems Command. He is a native of Illinois and she is from the D. C. metropolitan area, the former Miss Edna Hughes. In World War II. Col. Metzinger piloted B-17’s in the European Theatre. He flew on the Berlin Air Lift and is a command pilot. He flew B-47’s with the Strategic Air Command. Col. and Mrs. Metzinger met and were married in the District of Columbia area in 1954 when he was stationed at the Pentagon and serving additionally as a White House Aide under President Eisenhower.
