One of our most successful apple growers called yesterday. He said, “You can’t make money on $1.25 apples. Folks in Rappahannock had better get out and start thinning or there are going to be too many small apples this year.” Thin NOW. This seems to be the year of the tent caterpillar. As you drive along the fence rows, it is difficult to find a wild cherry tree that doesn’t have at least two or three grey white webbs in its limb forks. Several ladies have informed me politely but firmly that my recommendation to spray with Sevin has not had the slightest effect on stopping the tent caterpillar migration across their lawns, roses and evergreens.

I am afraid that at this state there is not a whole lot that can be done except take consolation in the fact that the caterpillars have about reached maturity and will soon disappear for the remainder of the year. They will pupate. Hatch out into an undistinguished moth that will lay her eggs on the wild cherries later this summer. These eggs will hatch next spring and the whole process will start over. The boxwood leaf minors are hatching this week and swarms of these little fly like insects can be found hovering around susceptible boxwoods. There is only one time of the year that these pests can be successfully controlled. If leaf minors have been a problem, suggest that you spray now with malathion, wait 10-14 days and spray again.
