Dr. Stanger was born in Blacksburg and educated at the Blacksburg Public Schools. He received an A.B. from Lynchburg College, a B.D. from Yale Divinity. School, and a M.A. in Higher Education from Hartford Seminary. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1961.
