Potter Announces
GOP Candidacy
Walter B. Potter, Culpeper newspaperman, announced his candidacy today for the Republican nomination for the 26th Senatorial District of Virginia, subject to the Republican convention to be held in Luray, on Saturday, August 28. Potter’s announcement came concurrently with the withdrawal of Dr. Alfred B. Cramer III from the race for personal and financial reasons. In addition to the daily StarExponent, Potter is also publisher of the Daily Record in Long Branch, N. J. and weekly newspapers, in Richlands, Tazewell, Saltville and Emporia in Virginia. He is also president of the Jefferson Savings and Loan Association of Culpeper.
Past president of Virginia Press Association and National Newspaper Association, Potter is immediate past chairman of the Virginia Associated Press newspapers.
A native of Emporia, he was educated in the public schools at Farmville and graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1948 with a bachelor of arts degree, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa. Following graduation he was managing editor of the Hopewell News until 1951 when he became editor and publisher of the The Virginia Star in Culpeper. In 1953 he acquired the Culpeper Exponent and merged the two papers. In 1963 the Star-Exponent became a daily newspaper. A veteran of World War II, Potter served two and a half years with the infantry in the European Theatre, He was awarded., the Combat Infantry Badge, %r|nzfe Star, two invasion arrovHwads/ and five battle stars. He recently retired as a Colonel in the U. S. Army Reserve.
