did not set out to become an educator, however, her conviction that these retarded children could be trained led her to develop various methods and materials, based on scientific observation and her medical knowledge of growth and development, with which to teach them. Her work with these children was so successful that they were able to pass the state examination for normal children, which created a furor in the Italian educational system and attracted widespread attention. This success aroused her curiosity as to what effect her methods and materials would have upon ‘'Normal'’ children and in 1907, she set about testing her ideas on such a group of children. Again, she met with such success that her school began attracting worldwide attention and interest, and Montessori schools began to be established in such diverse countries as the United States, Holland and India. One of the first Montessori schools to be established in the United States was in the home of Alexander Graham Bell.
