Luring Tourists
Washington- More Americans than ever before are expected to go underground this year. The hot summer months especially are likely to find family after family, lured by the promise of adventure, exploring the Nation’s cool, dark caverns. As tourists, most will be guided through the 165 or so caves open to the public. Several thousand cave explorers calling themselves spelunkers will squirm, climb, and wade through hundreds of other caves, some perhaps never before entered by man. Nobody knows how many caves have been found and forgotten at one time or another across the country, but estimates range from 20,000 to 50,000, the National Geographic Society says.
