With the return of more than one million children to Virginia’s schools this fall, motorists are urged to exercise the utmost caution when approaching school buses and when in the vicinity of school, John T. Hanna, director of the Highway Safety Division of Virginia, and Raymond L. Wimbish, supervisor of pupil transportation, State Department of Education said today.
“Last year eight school children were killed getting on or off school buses,” Hanna said. “These tragic deaths could be prevented if all motorists observed the law and took extra precaution when approaching a halted school bus.” On a rural highway or city street divided by a physical barrier or unpaved section, motorists are not required to stop if the bus is on the opposite side, according to the officials.
