A few more figures concerning this group also interested me. About one fourth of the teenagers regularly make up family shopping lists. Over one half of them do much of the family’s food shopping. And about a fourth of them help prepare family meals, while half of them do the dishes. So again, they are heavily involved in both economic activity and household tasks. To me, these figures point out many things, with two standing out particularly. For one thing, persons producing and marketing consumer goods cannot afford to ignore teenagers. They spend huge sums themselves, and they influence the spending of far greater sums.
It’s obvious to me that we should spend more time working with teenagers in terms of money management. Not only do they want the most value for their money now, but they are, as pointed out previously, going to control the purse strings of tomorrow. Now is the time to develop good money management habits, now when such habits are developing.
