Don’t Overlook the
Economic Import.
Of Teen-Agers
In general, I have only limited contact with teenagers. My own son hasn’t yet reached that age. And most of my work involves older persons. AS A RESULT, I tend to forget or pass over the economic importance of teenagers, both in their influence and in their direct spending. I also tend to forget that since they are the adults of tomorrow they will control the economic purse strings of tomorrow. Yet, I’m occasionally reminded of just what teenagers do contribute to our total economic society. And, when I am so reminded, I’m astounded at its magnitude.
A recent survey pointed out that the teenage girls alone in this country (and there are 12 million of them) spend over $7 billion a year. In terms of individuals this means each averages spending about $ll per week. And that’s just what they spend directly. It doesn’t involve the buying decisions they influence but do not actually make. So, you can see that just this one part of the teenage group is a potent economic force.
