Parents who are considering friving youngsters "minibikes." or miniature motorcycles, for Christmas should first lock well into the matter. Colonel E. W. Burgess. Superintendent of State Police, warned today. “Permitting a child below legal driving acre to take a powered vehicle on the highway to be faced with all situations an automobile driver faces without the protection of a steel body and the stability of four wheels is a dangerous procedure,” he said and added that so far this year in Virginia five young people have died on minibikes.
Colonel Burtre.ss observed that all too often minibike operation on public streets and highwavs is illegal since thev are legally motor vehicles and laws governing motor vehicles must be observed.
He said they must be registered. bear license plates and be insured, or have the uninsured motorist fee paid on them.
Operators and passengers must wear helmets, unless the wheels are less than eight inches in diameter. Operators must wear goggles or face masks, if the vehicle is not eauipped with a windshield, and obey all traffic regulations that drivers of automobiles must obey, as far as they can possiblv apply.
They must be officially inspected every six months and must have such items as horns,
