Sperryville Boy Scout Troop 65 braved the elements and held a weekend campout from Friday evening through Sunday. Headed by Scoutmaster Richard Wayland the troop of 14 boys camped near Slate Mills on the property of George Hawkins, both pictured above. Among the Scouts were Bill Houston, Ricky Wayland, Greg Wayland, James Porter, Tom and Tim Metzinger, Thomas Banks, Steve Jenkins* Neil Aylor, Kelly, Marc, Marty and Kevin Perdue and Mike Kosack. Gale winds Friday night gave them trouble and sbme of the tents could not withstand their force; therefore about 16 people slept in a tent made to accommodate nine. That was a good way to keep warm for by early Saturday morning the frost was so thick in the 15 degree weather that it looked more like snow. Guess that is what you call roughing it. Assisting with the daytime scouting were Jimmy Wayland and Sam Aylor.
